If you’re using a Spectra breast pump—or thinking about it—you’re in the right place. The Spectra S1 and S2 are fantastic choices for efficient and comfortable pumping, but getting started can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re a first-time pumper or just need a refresher, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to pump like a pro!

Why Moms Love the Spectra Pump

The Spectra pumps are widely loved for it’s reliability, quiet operation, and user-friendly design. The Spectra S1 is rechargeable for on-the-go convenience, while the Spectra S2 needs to be plugged in but offers the same powerful suction. Both have customizable settings to help you get the most milk comfortably.

I use my Spectra S1 in my office daily with clients, and it’s always my top recommendation when people ask for one. I love that it’s a closed system, so multiple people can use it, and it has a great track record.

Most insurance companies in the United States will cover Spectra breast pumps, which makes it even more accessible for most new moms.

Spectra Pump Parts & What They Do

Before you start pumping, let’s go over the parts of your Spectra breast pump:

  • Pump Motor – The heart of the system, where you’ll adjust suction and cycle speed.
  • Tubing – Connects the pump motor to the flanges.
  • Backflow Protectors – Keep milk from entering the tubing.
  • Valves & Membranes – Help create suction (replace these every few months for best performance).
  • Flanges (Breast Shields) – These come in standard sizes, but I highly recommend getting properly sized ones for comfort and efficiency! I recommend ordering a Maymom Spectra Adapter and
  • Bottles – Collect your pumped milk.

Before your first use, wash and sanitize all pump parts that touch milk.

Setting Up Your Spectra Pump

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Connect the tubing to the pump motor and backflow protectors.
  2. Attach the valves and flanges securely.
  3. Connect your bottles to the flanges.
  4. Plug in your Spectra S2 or charge your Spectra S1 for portable use.

Flange Fit Tip

A proper fit prevents pain and helps you pump more efficiently. Your nipple should move freely in the tunnel. It’s okay if it touches the sides, but it shouldn’t be super tight. If pumping is uncomfortable, check your flange size! This can make a huge difference for your pumping experience.

Most women are smaller than 19—in my practice, the average is about 15mm—at least in my practice. If you need some help navigating this, be sure to check out my online class, Fuss-Free Flange Fitting.

Adjusting Spectra Pump Settings for Comfort & Efficiency

changing spectra settings

One of the best features of the Spectra pump is how customizable it is. Here’s a breakdown of the settings and how to use them:

Understanding the Two Phases

Your pump automatically starts in expression mode. To toggle between the two phases, press the wavy button at the top.

  • Letdown Mode (Massage Mode) – Stimulates quick, shallow sucks to trigger milk flow.
    • Cycle speed: 70 CPM (cannot be adjusted)
    • Vacuum strength: Start low (around level 3-5) and increase as needed.
  • Expression Mode – Mimics a baby’s deeper, slower sucking pattern.
    • Cycle speed options: 38, 42, 46, or 54 CPM
    • Vacuum strength: Increase to your comfort level (max is 12, but most moms find 5-7 comfortable and effective).

Pro Tips for a Comfortable Pumping Session

  • Start in Letdown Mode and switch to Expression Mode when milk starts flowing for about 30 seconds. You can switch after two minutes if you don’t see milk flowing.
  • Don’t crank up suction too high—it should be strong but comfortable. Pumping should not be painful.
  • Try different cycle speeds in Expression Mode to find what works best for you.

Starting and Stopping Your Session

  1. Turn on your Spectra pump and start in Letdown Mode (cycle speed: 70, suction level: 3-5 depending on preference).
  2. Once milk starts flowing (usually after 1-2 minutes), switch to Expression Mode and adjust:
    • Cycle speed: 42-54 CPM (higher speeds mimic a newborn, lower speeds mimic an older baby).
    • Suction level: Increase gradually to a comfortable setting (typically 5-7).
  3. Pump for 15-20 minutes or until milk slows.
  4. Turn off the pump, detach the bottles, and store your milk properly.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Low Suction? Check that the tubing is securely attached and valves aren’t worn out (or missing). Make sure the backflow protector is put together correctly. I’ve seen this cause issues a number of times!
  • Pain or Discomfort? Adjust suction level or check if your flanges are the right size.

Cleaning & Maintaining Your Spectra Pump

Proper cleaning ensures your pump stays in great shape and your milk stays safe!

  • Daily Cleaning:
    • Disassemble and wash flanges, valves, and bottles with warm, soapy water.
    • Air dry on a clean surface.
  • Sterilization:
    • Boil parts (except tubing) for 5 minutes before first use and occasionally as needed.
  • Tubing Maintenance:
    • Unlike some pumps, Spectra tubing doesn’t need regular washing—just wipe if condensation appears.
  • Pump Motor Care:
    • Wipe down with a dry cloth and keep it in a clean, dry space.

Helpful Accessories & Features

To make pumping even easier, consider these Spectra-compatible extras:

  • Hands-Free Pumping Bra – Let’s you pump while multitasking. Highly recommend getting one of these!
  • Milk Storage Bags & Adapters – Pump directly into bags.
  • Spectra Nightlight Feature – Handy for middle-of-the-night pumping. Just press the little light button on your Spectra!
  • Built-in Timer – Helps track your sessions.
  • Battery Power (S1 Only) – Allows cordless pumping anywhere!
  • Ceres Chill – This is one of those items I think EVERY pumping mom needs!

Pumping can feel like a learning curve, but you’ll find your rhythm in no time with the right setup and settings. Every drop of milk you pump is a win, so celebrate your effort!
