Can Breastfeeding Cause Constipation?

Some women may find that they are more constipated while breastfeeding. While totally normal, there are a few things you can do to help it.

Can breastfeeding cause constipation?

If you find yourself constipated more often while breastfeeding you might want to first look at your current diet. When you breastfeed you may be eating differently which can lead to constipation. For example, some breastfeeding mothers choose to cut out caffeine while they breastfeed. This can slow things down which affects your bowel movements. Also, if you aren’t taking the time to get all your greens in or drinking enough water (because hello, you are a mama and life is busy) you could find yourself struggling with constipation.

So, while breastfeeding itself doesn’t cause constipation other outside variables may contribute to it. Try staying hydrated, eating foods high in fiber, move around more, take a warm calming bath or reach out to your care provider as they can recommend stool softeners, medications or supplements safe to take while breastfeeding.
